"Sound, or rather memory, is a vital part of our society." How do we use sound to preserve culture and memory? Two foreigners in China are writing their own answers. Colin David Chinnery from the UK records Beijing's culture through sound. In the Sound Art Museum he co-founded, the everyday sounds of old Beijing are meticulously recorded and recreated. Meanwhile, in Tianjin, Franco Raydis from Venezuela translates Tianjin crosstalk into Spanish, preserving its unique local humor. They use sound as a medium for cross-cultural communication, and in the process, have found a sense of home in a foreign land.
