In accordance with the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet Spelling Rules for Chinese Names (GB/T 28039-2011) and relevant international specifications to all machine-readable travel documents (MRTDs), the rules for printing the letter "Ü" in Chinese mainland residents' Pinyin-spelled names in exit-entry documents are announced as follows:

1. When Chinese mainland residents apply for exit-entry documents, the letter "Ü" in their Pinyin-spelled names shall be printed in exit-entry documents in accordance with following rules: the letter "Ü" in LÜ (Chinese characters like "吕", etc.) and NÜ (Chinese characters like "女", etc.) shall be converted to "YU"; the letter "Ü" in LÜE (Chinese characters like "略", etc.) and NÜE (Chinese characters like "虐", etc.) shall be converted to "U".

2. Given that some Chinese mainland residents still hold the exit-entry documents or other documents printed in accordance with the old rules, in order to avoid the inconvenience caused to the holders by the inconsistent letter "Ü" conversion rules when they travel or handle related affairs, the national immigration administration agencies may print the applicants' Pinyin-spelled names in consistency with the ones in their previously issued documents upon their request when issuing new exit-entry documents.
