From January to August 2026, China’s border inspection agencies nationwide handled 499 million inbound and outbound trips, up by 8.7 percent year on year. These included 242 million trips by Chinese mainland residents, 196 million trips by residents from Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan, and 61.29 million trips by foreign nationals, representing year-on-year increases of 10 percent, 8.9 percent, and 19.5 percent respectively. Of all foreign entries, 23.72 million were made under visa-free policies, accounting for 77.6 percent of total and representing a 26.8 percent year-on-year increase. China’s border inspection agencies inspected 28.15 million inbound and outbound means of transportation, including 665,000 planes, 75,000 trains, 306,000 ships and 27.10 million motor vehicles, a 15 percent increase year on year, with these categories rising 0.5 percent, 5.6 percent, 4.1 percent, and 15.6 percent, respectively.
